University Students Form 12 Political Parties Under Youth Parliament Initiative

KUALA LUMPUR – In a significant step toward political maturity among the youth, 12 political parties have been officially established across various universities through the Youth Parliament initiative.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker, Tan Sri Johari Abdul, announced that these student-led parties serve as a platform for the younger generation to practice democratic processes and leadership within their campus ecosystems. This initiative is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in governance, policy-making, and political organizing.

“This is a healthy development for our nation’s democracy. By allowing students to form and manage their own political parties in a controlled academic environment, we are nurturing future leaders who are well-versed in parliamentary procedures and the art of debate,” Johari stated.

The establishment of these parties follows the government’s efforts to empower youth after the implementation of Undi18, which lowered the voting age and allowed for automatic voter registration. The Youth Parliament serves as a bridge, ensuring that students do not just participate as voters but also understand the complexities of political representation.

Johari emphasized that these campus parties are expected to focus on student welfare, academic policies, and national issues, fostering a more politically aware and responsible student body. He also noted that the move helps to de-stigmatize politics within higher education institutions, transforming universities into hubs for intellectual and political growth.
