Claims of Bersatu Members Joining DAP Reflect Political Freedom, Says Analyst

KUALA LUMPUR – Allegations that several members and grassroots leaders from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) intend to join DAP are being viewed as a natural reflection of democratic freedom in Malaysia.

Political analyst Dr. Mohammad Tawfik Yaakub noted that such movements, if true, are protected under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution, which guarantees the right to freedom of association. He remarked that in a healthy democracy, individuals are free to choose the political platform that they believe best serves their interests and welfare.

“This scenario is a common occurrence in any political system. Members and leaders will often seek out platforms that offer better stability, vision, or the ability to serve the public more effectively,” Dr. Tawfik explained.

The claims first surfaced following a statement by Muhammad Najmi Samsudin, Chairman of the DAP Wangsa Permai Kepong branch, who alleged that several Bersatu leaders from Selangor had approached him expressing interest in joining DAP. The interest was reportedly sparked by internal friction and perceived instability within Bersatu’s current leadership.

Responding to these claims, DAP national leaders, including Hannah Yeoh, have maintained that anyone wishing to join the party must follow official procedures. Meanwhile, DAP National Vice-Chairman Syahredzan Johan emphasized that while the party welcomes diverse members, including those from the Malay community, it will not compromise its core principles or act hastily.

Analysts further suggest that this trend could help DAP soften its “Chinese-dominated” image, potentially attracting more Malay voters and positioning the party as a more inclusive multiracial platform ahead of future elections.
