Federal Court Reinstates Six-Year Jail Sentence for Former Felda Chairman Isa Samad

KUALA LUMPUR – The Federal Court has ordered former Cabinet Minister and Felda Chairman, Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad, to begin serving a six-year prison sentence after overturning his previous acquittal in a high-profile corruption case.

The 76-year-old veteran politician was also ordered to pay a staggering RM15.45 million fine. Should he fail to settle the fine, he faces an additional 18 years behind bars.

The legal saga dates back to December 2018, when Isa Samad was first charged in relation to the purchase of the Merdeka Palace Hotel & Suites in Kuching, Sarawak, by Felda Investment Corporation Sdn Bhd (FICSB).

• One count of criminal breach of trust (CBT).
• Nine counts of receiving bribes totaling over RM3 million.

According to court documents, the illicit transactions occurred between July 2014 and December 2015 on the 49th floor of Menara Felda, KLCC. The prosecution successfully argued that Isa used his position to receive kickbacks in exchange for approving the hotel acquisition.

The charges were framed under Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of at least five times the value of the bribe.
