Malaysia and UK Forge Stronger Ties to Revolutionize Green Transportation System

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia and the United Kingdom have officially strengthened their bilateral cooperation to develop a more sustainable, integrated, and future-ready transportation landscape. This commitment was solidified during the inaugural UK-Malaysia Green Transport Dialogue, held in the capital city on February 10–11, 2026.

The two-day forum served as a strategic platform for policymakers and industry leaders to exchange expertise on low-carbon frameworks and technological innovations. The initiative is a collaborative effort between the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s Ministry of Transport (MOT), and the Malaysia Rail Development Corporation (MRDC).

Driving a Low-Carbon Vision

British High Commissioner to Malaysia, Ajay Sharma, highlighted that green transport policies have transitioned into a cornerstone of the UK-Malaysia relationship. He emphasized that the partnership is rooted in a shared commitment to mitigating climate change through modernized urban planning.

“The UK is ready to support Malaysia’s vision in expanding low-carbon public transport, accelerating vehicle electrification, and embedding sustainability into the fabric of urban development,” Sharma stated in a recent press release.

Leveraging British Expertise

The dialogue featured high-level contributions from seasoned UK organizations, including Transport for London (TfL) and Crossrail International. These entities shared vital lessons learned from the UK’s extensive history in managing multi-modal transport systems and institutional reforms.

Key areas of focus during the discussions included:

• Transit-Oriented Development (TOD): Creating urban hubs that maximize access to public transport.
• First and Last-Mile Connectivity: Improving the ease of travel between home and transport stations.
• Modern Tram Design and Bus Optimization: Utilizing data and modern engineering to enhance efficiency.
• Green Rail Development: Implementing sustainable practices within the railway sector.

A Sustainable Path Forward

Representing the Malaysian government, Dr. Siti Muhaza Sheikh Zainal, Undersecretary of the International and Strategic Planning Division of the Ministry of Transport, joined industry experts to explore how joint technical expertise can support Malaysia’s long-term environmental goals.

As Malaysia continues to modernize its infrastructure, this partnership with the UK is expected to catalyze the transition toward a greener economy, ensuring that the nation’s transport growth aligns with global sustainability standards.
