Traditional Clay Oven “Heong Peng” Biscuits Remain a Signature Attraction in Tambun

KUALA LUMPUR — In an era dominated by modern machinery, IXiang Biscuits and Confectionery in Jalan Tambun Baru continues to uphold a 40-year-old tradition that draws crowds from across the country: the art of baking Heong Peng biscuits using traditional clay ovens.

The business, now managed by Teoh Seng Nyap, 47, alongside his brother-in-law Liew Ming Foon, 54, and sister Teoh Fei Looi, 54, remains committed to the authentic method of using charcoal and coconut shells as fuel to bake their signature treats.

Liew Ming Foon, who has been honing this craft since the age of 14, explained that the distinct smoky aroma produced by the clay oven is what sets their biscuits apart. Unlike mass-produced alternatives, these handmade biscuits—also known as Ma Ti Su—are celebrated for their crispy texture, unique maltose filling, and balanced sweetness.

“Each baking session in our specialized clay oven produces about 120 biscuits per hour. On average, we produce 1,200 biscuits daily to meet the demand of customers who visit our shop,” Liew told Bernama.

The name of the biscuit itself carries cultural significance. Teoh Seng Nyap noted that while the term Ma Ti Su refers to the shape resembling a horse’s hoof (popular in Taiping, Penang, and Johor), the name Heong Peng—meaning “fragrant biscuit” in Cantonese—is more commonly used by residents in Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur.

The demand for these traditional delicacies typically doubles during the Chinese New Year season. Sales often reach between 200 to 300 packs per day as tourists and locals returning to their hometowns seek out authentic traditional gifts.

Despite the current success, the future of this heritage craft faces challenges. Liew expressed concern over the lack of interest among the younger generation. The labor-intensive process and the intense heat from the clay ovens are often seen as deterrents for youths who prefer less physically demanding environments.

Located in Tambun, the shop operates daily from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, except on Wednesdays, which are reserved for the preparation process. Prices start at RM11 for a pack of eight, with individual gift packaging available for RM12.
