KOTA KINABALU – The flood situation in Sabah has worsened, with the number of displaced residents climbing to 5,532 as of Friday morning. This marks a significant increase from the 4,650 evacuees recorded just a day prior, as heavy rains continue to impact the region.
According to the Sabah State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) Secretariat, a total of 1,943 families have been moved to safety. Currently, 27 temporary relief centers (PPS) are operational across five affected districts to accommodate the rising number of victims.
Tenom Remains Hardest Hit
Tenom continues to be the most severely affected district, reporting a sharp rise in evacuees. The number of displaced individuals in the area reached 3,149 from 1,063 families, up from 2,406 people on Thursday night.
In Beaufort, authorities have opened an additional relief center at the Bisaya Arts and Cultural Hall to manage the influx of residents. This brings the total to five active relief centers in the district, housing 1,456 individuals.
Regional Impact and Safety Status
Other districts across the state also remain on high alert:
- Membakut: Evacuee numbers have increased to 427 people.
- Sipitang: The situation remains steady with 421 residents currently in relief centers.
- Sook: A total of 79 victims are still seeking shelter.
Overall, the floods have submerged 146 villages across these five districts. Despite the extensive property damage and widespread displacement, the Secretariat confirmed that no casualties or fatalities have been reported as of 8:00 AM today.
Emergency services and local authorities continue to monitor water levels and provide essential supplies to those stationed at the relief centers. Residents in low-lying areas are advised to remain vigilant as weather conditions stay unpredictable.
