UMNO Postpones Party Elections Until After PRU16 to Focus on General Election Readiness

KUALA LUMPUR – UMNO has officially announced the postponement of its party elections, which were originally slated for this year. The internal polls will now be held no later than six months after the 16th General Election (PRU16).

UMNO Secretary-General Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki confirmed that the decision was made in accordance with the party’s constitution, specifically under Clauses 10.16, 10.16.1, and 10.16.2.

Strategic Preparedness

According to Asyraf Wajdi, the primary reason for this deferment is to ensure that the party machinery at all levels remains fully concentrated on the upcoming national polls. By shifting the focus away from internal competition, the party aims to be battle-ready for both State Elections and PRU16, which could be called at any time starting this year.

“This move is to ensure that the entire party machinery is fully prepared to face the possibility of State Elections and PRU16,” he stated in a press release on Thursday.

2026 Party Calendar

Despite the postponement of the top leadership elections, UMNO has released its official schedule for annual meetings and branch-level gatherings for 2026:

• UMNO Branch Meetings: Scheduled to run from April 1 to May 17.
• Division Delegate Meetings: Set to take place between June 1 and July 12.
• UMNO General Assembly (PAU): The five-day national convention will be held from August 12 to August 16.

80th Anniversary Celebrations

Coinciding with the party’s 80th anniversary this year, UMNO Malaysia will also spearhead several high-profile events. On May 1, the party will host the Bumiputera Education Congress, followed by the UMNO Convention on May 2 at the World Trade Centre (WTC) in Kuala Lumpur.

The announcement marks a significant tactical shift for Malaysia’s oldest political party as it stabilizes its internal ranks ahead of a high-stakes national electoral cycle.
