Malaysia Education Ministry Monitoring Schools to Prevent Spread of Extremist Ideologies

BUKIT MERTAJAM, March 13— Malaysia’s Ministry of Education is closely monitoring schools across the country to prevent extremist ideologies from entering the education system and influencing students.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry is paying close attention to any student involvement in militant or extremist activities within educational institutions. The ministry aims to ensure that schools remain safe learning environments free from radical influence.

Speaking to reporters after launching the School in Hospital (SDH) Programme at Seberang Jaya Hospital in Penang, Fadhlina said the ministry is cooperating with relevant authorities to investigate any cases linked to extremist activities and to take necessary action.

Monitoring Students and Schools

According to the minister, the ministry is actively monitoring student involvement within schools to prevent extremist elements from penetrating the education system. Authorities are focusing particularly on ensuring that radical ideologies do not spread among young people through informal networks or online platforms.

She emphasised that cooperation between education authorities and enforcement agencies is crucial to safeguard students, teachers and the wider education framework from radical influences.

Arrests Linked to Extremist Activities

The heightened monitoring follows recent police operations that uncovered attempts to revive a militant network linked to the extremist group Daesh in Malaysia. Authorities arrested six suspects aged between 16 and 21 years old, including three minors, during a two-day operation conducted by the police Special Branch beginning February 14.

The arrests took place in several locations including the Klang Valley, Johor, Kedah and Terengganu.

Investigations revealed that the group allegedly targeted teenagers and maintained communication with extremist contacts abroad. Authorities also discovered discussions about possible attacks on police stations and houses of worship, as well as plans to produce improvised explosive devices using messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Discord.

Protecting the Education Environment

The Education Ministry stressed that maintaining a safe and inclusive learning environment is a top priority. Monitoring efforts are part of broader initiatives aimed at preventing radicalisation among youth while ensuring that schools remain spaces focused on education, critical thinking and social harmony.

Officials say the ministry will continue to work with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to detect early signs of radical influence and respond quickly if any threats emerge.
