PAS Activist: Rafizi’s Critique a “Windfall” for PN Ahead of GE16

KUALA LUMPUR – Internal friction within the Unity Government has been characterized as a “windfall” for the opposition, according to PAS activist Lokman Bonyamin. The recent string of public critiques by Economy Minister and PKR heavyweight, Rafizi Ramli, is reportedly shifting the political landscape in favor of Perikatan Nasional (PN) as Malaysia edges closer to the 16th General Election (GE16).

In a statement released on Tuesday, Lokman suggested that the perceived instability within the ruling coalition allows PAS and PN to gain ground without significant effort. He noted that when the government appears “divided or chaotic,” Malay voters, in particular, tend to gravitate toward the perceived stability and consistency of the opposition.

The “Architect” Raising Red Flags

The significance of the critique lies in Rafizi’s role as the primary “architect” of PKR. Lokman pointed out that because Rafizi understands the internal mechanics of both his party and the administration, his public dissatisfaction serves as a powerful signal of systemic execution failures.

“When a leader from within the government expresses discontent, it reinforces the perception that the reform process is being stifled by bureaucracy or political compromise,” Lokman stated.

Economic “Formulas” vs. Reality

Despite positive macroeconomic indicators frequently cited by the government, Lokman argued that the “man on the street” remains fixated on dwindling purchasing power and the rising cost of living.

He highlighted two critical pressure points:

• Institutional Reform: Supporters of Pakatan Harapan (PH) are reportedly growing restless over the lack of tangible results in governance changes.
• Fuel Subsidies: Lokman warned that the management of fuel prices could become a “double-edged sword.” If subsidy rationalization is not handled with extreme care—particularly regarding the M40 group—it could become the administration’s greatest vulnerability.

Looking Toward GE16

The activist concluded that the widening gap between “promises” and “reality” is the primary driver for fence-sitters to reconsider their allegiances. For PN, this internal discord within the government provides a strategic opening to present themselves as a focused and reliable alternative.

As the political narrative shifts, the Unity Government faces the uphill task of closing its internal ranks and delivering visible economic relief to prevent further erosion of its support base.
