PM Anwar and President Prabowo Strengthen Regional Strategy Amidst Middle East Crisis

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officially concluded a one-day special visit to Jakarta on Friday, March 27, 2026, following a high-level meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. The meeting, held at the Merdeka Palace, saw both leaders reach a consensus on navigating increasingly volatile global geopolitical uncertainties.

The primary focus of the discussion between Anwar and Prabowo centered on the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, specifically the tensions between Iran and Israel and the deteriorating situation in Palestine. Both leaders emphasized the urgent need for a unified diplomatic approach to de-escalate tensions and protect civilian lives.

“Malaysia and Indonesia have agreed to intensify diplomatic efforts to ensure that regional stability is not compromised by external conflicts,” PM Anwar stated in a media release following the meeting.

A critical issue raised during the dialogue was the security of strategic trade routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz. Given that a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes through this area, disruptions to these lanes are feared to potentially paralyze global supply chains and spike energy costs across Southeast Asia.

Both leaders highlighted the following priorities:

  • Supply Chain Continuity: Ensuring international trade remains uninterrupted by military conflicts.
  • Economic Resilience: Mitigating the impact of rising fuel prices on the domestic economies of both nations.
  • ASEAN Solidarity: Strengthening ASEAN’s role as a united and principled bloc in maintaining regional peace.

This brief visit marked PM Anwar’s first trip to Jakarta in 2026, conducted upon the personal invitation of President Prabowo. Upon his arrival at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, Anwar was warmly received by Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono.

This meeting serves as a prelude to the 14th Malaysia-Indonesia Annual Consultation scheduled for later this year, where more technical issues and bilateral economic cooperation will be discussed in further detail.
