Legendary BMW Tuner AC Schnitzer to Shut Down After Nearly 40 Years

,April 2 — One of the most iconic names in the BMW tuning world, AC Schnitzer, has announced it will shut down operations by the end of 2026, bringing nearly 40 years of automotive performance heritage to an end.

The decision was confirmed by its parent company Kohl Group, which said it will cease the company’s operations as a manufacturer of tuning parts and performance upgrades for BMW and MINI vehicles.

Founded in 1987 in Aachen by Willi Kohl and Herbert Schnitzer, the company quickly gained international recognition for producing high-performance upgrades, aerodynamic body kits, suspension systems, wheels, and engine modifications for BMW models.

Over the decades, AC Schnitzer became a household name among automotive enthusiasts, particularly BMW fans seeking performance upgrades inspired by motorsport engineering. The company also produced several complete tuned vehicles, including models such as the ACS3 Sport based on the BMW E30 M3 and the V8 Roadster derived from the BMW Z3.

However, the tuning specialist has struggled to maintain competitiveness in recent years. According to company management, the growing costs of research, development, and production have placed significant financial pressure on the business. In addition, strict regulatory requirements and lengthy approval procedures for aftermarket components in Germany have delayed product releases by months compared with international competitors.

Industry analysts also point to broader shifts in the automotive market. The transition toward electric vehicles and increasingly complex automotive software systems has reduced opportunities for traditional mechanical tuning, which once formed the core of AC Schnitzer’s business model.

Other challenges include volatile exchange rates, rising raw-material prices, global economic uncertainty, and declining interest in car modification among younger drivers. These factors collectively contributed to the company’s declining competitiveness in the global aftermarket performance sector.

Despite the closure, the AC Schnitzer brand may not disappear completely. The Kohl Group confirmed that discussions are underway with potential investors who may acquire the brand name in the future. If a buyer is found, the brand could continue operating under new ownership.

Until the official shutdown in 2026, AC Schnitzer will continue selling its remaining inventory of performance parts, including suspension kits, aerodynamic components, wheels, and interior accessories. The company has also assured customers that warranties and after-sales support for existing products will remain valid even after operations cease.

For automotive enthusiasts worldwide, the closure marks the end of an era. For nearly four decades, AC Schnitzer played a major role in shaping the global BMW tuning culture, creating some of the most recognisable aftermarket performance upgrades for German luxury vehicles.
