Kuala Lumpur — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched an investigation into 17 individuals suspected of spreading false information related to fuel price increases and new electricity tariffs that recently went viral on social media.
According to MCMC, statements have already been recorded from eight individuals across multiple cases involving misleading posts about fuel price hikes. Out of five such cases, three individuals had previously given their statements, while two more were recorded just recently.
In addition, authorities are also looking into three separate cases involving false claims about revised electricity tariffs. The remaining nine individuals are currently under monitoring and are expected to be called in for questioning soon.
The investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries penalties of up to RM500,000 in fines, imprisonment of up to two years, or both upon conviction.
MCMC emphasized that it takes the misuse of social media platforms seriously, particularly when it involves the spread of false or misleading information that could confuse or alarm the public.
The commission warned that such misinformation has the potential to trigger unnecessary panic and anxiety among citizens, and firm action will be taken against those found violating the law.
