Bursa Malaysia Seen Trading Range-Bound Next Week Amid Middle East Tensions

KUALA LUMPUR, April — Malaysian equities are expected to continue trading within a narrow range next week as investors remain cautious amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, according to market analysts.

The benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) is likely to fluctuate between 1,680 and 1,740 points, reflecting a market that has stabilized after recent sell-offs but continues to lack strong bullish momentum. Analysts say global uncertainty, especially linked to the Middle East conflict, remains a key factor limiting upside in Malaysian equities.

Mohd Sedek Jantan, director of investment strategy at IPPFA Sdn Bhd, said, “While the market has recovered partially from the panic sell-offs seen in previous weeks, investors are still cautious. The geopolitical landscape overseas continues to influence sentiment, and the local market is likely to remain in a consolidation phase.”

Sectoral Outlook

Sector performance this week showed mixed trends. The Financial Services Index fell significantly as investors weighed the impact of potential global monetary tightening, while the Plantation Index gained, supported by rising commodity prices amid supply concerns in global markets. The Energy Index also recorded modest gains following a surge in global crude oil prices resulting from the conflict in West Asia.

“The rise in energy prices has dual effects,” added Mohd Sedek. “While it supports energy and plantation stocks, it also raises inflationary concerns globally, potentially affecting central bank policies and exerting pressure on financial stocks.”

Trading volumes surged this week, indicating active participation despite cautious sentiment. The total turnover was 17.79 billion units valued at RM18.83 billion, compared with 12.24 billion units worth RM13.69 billion the previous week. Analysts interpret this as selective buying in key sectors while broader indices remain range-bound.

Global Influence

Regional and global markets have been closely monitoring developments in West Asia. Tensions in oil-producing regions have contributed to higher crude prices and heightened volatility in Asian equity markets. Analysts warn that further escalation could impact Malaysia’s market performance, particularly for sectors sensitive to oil prices and currency fluctuations.

“Investors should adopt a cautious and balanced approach,” said Mohd Sedek. “Diversification across sectors and a careful assessment of global economic signals are essential to manage risk in the current uncertain environment.”

Near-Term Market Expectations

  • FBM KLCI Range: 1,680 – 1,740
  • Volatility: Moderate, driven by geopolitical and global financial factors
  • Investor Strategy: Balanced, cautious, selective buying in defensive sectors like plantation and energy

Analysts emphasize that the coming week may see consolidation in the FBM KLCI as investors digest ongoing geopolitical developments, global central bank signals, and the impact of rising energy prices on the Malaysian economy.

The local market remains influenced by international events, particularly developments in Middle East oil-producing countries, global interest rate expectations, and supply-chain concerns, which are key drivers for investor sentiment in the coming weeks.
