Kuala Lumpur – US President Donald Trump has announced an extension of the fragile ceasefire with Iran, while insisting that the American naval blockade on Iranian ports will remain firmly in place.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Tuesday, Trump stated that he directed the US military to continue the blockade and hold off any attacks to give Iranian leaders more time to submit a unified proposal to end the conflict.
“I have therefore directed our Military to continue the Blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and able, and will therefore extend the Ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other,” Trump wrote.
The extension was requested by Pakistani mediators, including Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Trump cited the “seriously fractured” state of Iran’s government as a reason for the delay in reaching a unified position.
The original two-week ceasefire, agreed on 8 April, was due to expire on Wednesday. The extension is open-ended from the US side.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the continued blockade, describing it as “an act of war” and a violation of the ceasefire. He added that Iran knows how to defend its interests and resist bullying. Tehran has yet to issue an official response, with state media saying a position will be announced later.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the extension and expressed hope that both sides would observe the truce to allow peace talks to progress in Islamabad.
The ceasefire has been strained by disagreements over the inclusion of Lebanon and control of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The conflict escalated after US and Israeli strikes on 28 February that killed several top Iranian officials, including former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was succeeded by his son Mojtaba Khamenei.
Analysts note that deep divisions remain: the US is demanding the complete shutdown of Iran’s nuclear programme, limits on missile production, and an end to support for groups like Hezbollah and Hamas. Iran, meanwhile, insists on its right to enrich uranium and refuses major concessions on its military capabilities or regional alliances.
The extension provides temporary breathing room but leaves significant uncertainty hanging over the region, with the ongoing blockade continuing to raise tensions.
