Russian Missile and Drone Attack Kills at Least 16 in Kyiv

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 A major Russian missile and drone bombardment has killed at least 16 people in and around Kyiv, marking one of the most intense aerial attacks on the Ukrainian capital since the beginning of the war. Officials also reported at least 33 people injured.

The attack began around midnight and continued into Thursday afternoon. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said residential buildings, a school and a children’s medical centre were among the sites damaged across the city.

Ukraine’s air force said Russia deployed a combination of ballistic, cruise and hypersonic missiles alongside 168 drones. Ukrainian forces said they intercepted 41 of 46 cruise missiles and 145 drones, but were unable to stop the high-speed ballistic missiles involved in the attack.

The Solomianskyi district was among the hardest-hit areas, where eight deaths were reported. A multistorey apartment building was struck, destroying upper-floor flats, while fires and extensive damage were reported at several other locations.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the scale and combination of weapons showed that Russia had prepared extensively for the assault. He renewed calls for stronger international support, particularly additional anti-ballistic missile defence systems.

Ukraine continues to face shortages of Patriot missile interceptors, limiting its ability to defend against fast-moving ballistic weapons. The Ukrainian air force said Russia used weapons including Kinzhal and Zircon hypersonic missiles, Iskander and North Korean KN-23 ballistic missiles, Kalibr cruise missiles and Shahed drones.

The attack also affected areas outside the capital. One person was killed and another wounded in the Brovary district, while warehouses in Boryspil were hit, including a facility operated by the Ukrainian Red Cross.

The heavy bombardment comes as both Russia and Ukraine intensify long-range attacks. Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian oil refineries and infrastructure with drones and domestically developed missiles, while Moscow has stepped up missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.
