KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Renewed Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip have cast further doubt on efforts to strengthen the fragile ceasefire, with at least 17 Palestinians reported killed on Tuesday and Wednesday. The latest violence came shortly after new US diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing hostilities.
At least 10 people were killed on Wednesday in strikes around Gaza City and the Nuseirat refugee camp, according to Palestinian medical sources. Israel said the operations targeted Hamas members, including a commander it accused of taking part in the October 7, 2023 attack on southern Israel.
The previous day, an Israeli strike hit a seaside cafe in Gaza, killing seven Palestinians according to Gaza health officials. The attacks followed talks between US negotiator Jared Kushner and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over Washington’s plan for ending the conflict.
Kushner reportedly asked Netanyahu to scale back Israeli military operations during a lengthy meeting on Monday. Despite diplomatic engagement with both Israel and Hamas, the latest round of discussions produced no major breakthrough on the key issues blocking further implementation of the ceasefire plan.
One of the biggest disputes remains the sequence of Hamas disarmament and Israeli military withdrawal. Hamas has indicated that disarmament would depend on Israel ending attacks and withdrawing forces, while Netanyahu maintains that Israel will not pull back from its current positions until Hamas is fully disarmed.
Tensions also increased after Israeli troops reportedly crossed the ceasefire line near Khan Younis and detained a Hamas police colonel. The incident added to concerns that continued military operations could further undermine attempts to stabilise the territory.
The ceasefire introduced last October significantly reduced the scale of fighting but has not completely stopped Israeli strikes. Gaza health officials say more than 1,270 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire began, while the overall Palestinian death toll since the start of the war has exceeded 73,000.
The Trump administration is continuing to push its broader Gaza plan, which includes demilitarisation, Israeli withdrawal, reconstruction and a proposed international stabilisation force. However, continuing attacks and disagreements between Israel and Hamas remain major obstacles to a lasting settlement.
