Kelantan Health Department Seizes 5,584 Unregistered Weight-Loss Products After Year-Long Probe

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — The Kelantan State Health Department (JKNK) seized 5,584 health products, most of them unregistered weight-loss medicines suspected of containing scheduled poisons, following coordinated raids after about a year of intelligence gathering.

The Pharmacy Enforcement Branch simultaneously raided seven premises suspected of violating provisions under the Sale of Drugs Act 1952 and the Poisons Act 1952. Authorities also seized two digital devices, including a phone and computer, to help trace the distribution network behind the products.

JKNK director Dr Kasuadi Hussin said the overall value of the seized products and devices was estimated at around RM60,000. Investigators are examining whether the products were imported, diverted from legitimate supply channels or produced through other sources.

The operation began after authorities received complaints about the sale of unregistered medicines suspected of containing controlled substances. Samples taken from products linked to the complaint were found to contain scheduled poisons, prompting further investigation.

No arrests have been made so far as investigations remain ongoing. Workers found at the premises were questioned for information, while the seized digital devices will be analysed to identify suppliers and other parties potentially connected to the distribution chain.

Dr Kasuadi said no individuals had yet reported adverse effects from using the products, but authorities suspect they could affect the cardiovascular system, particularly the heart. All seized products will be sent for laboratory testing to determine their contents.

The case is being investigated under drug and poison control laws. Depending on the offence, those convicted under the Poisons Act could face a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both.
