30,000 Devotees Gather for Chithirai Pournami Festival at Teluk Intan Temple

KUALA LUMPUR,May, 2026 — An estimated 30,000 Hindu devotees gathered at the historic Sri Thendayuthapani Temple to celebrate the annual Chithirai Pournami festival, marking one of the most significant religious events in the region.

The three-day celebration saw thousands arriving as early as morning to fulfil vows and participate in sacred rituals at the 150-year-old temple located along Jalan Bandar.

Sacred Rituals and Vibrant Traditions

Devotees began the day with the paal koodam (milk pot) ceremony, followed by prayers, the carrying of kavadis, and the breaking of coconuts — all symbolic acts of devotion and spiritual fulfilment.

Chithirai Pournami marks the full moon in the first month of the Tamil calendar (April–May) and is often referred to as a “Mini Thaipusam” in Malaysia, honoring Lord Murugan and Lord Chitragupta.

Authorities Ensure Smooth Crowd Management

Local authorities, along with police and the People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA), were deployed to manage traffic and ensure safety throughout the large-scale gathering. Their coordinated efforts helped maintain order during the peak of the celebration.

Future Changes for Festival Traders

Officials also announced that traders participating in the annual festival will be relocated starting next year. This move is part of upcoming upgrading works at the Leaning Tower Square, expected to begin soon and last approximately three years.

The relocation aims to reduce congestion and improve comfort for visitors attending the festival in the future

The Chithirai Pournami celebration in Teluk Intan continues to reflect Malaysia’s rich cultural diversity and religious harmony, attracting thousands of devotees and visitors each year.

With its deep spiritual significance and strong community participation, the festival remains one of the most anticipated annual events in Perak.
