KUALA LUMPUR,May, 2026 — A sudden tornado-like whirlwind swept through the MPL Housing area near Tanjung Aru in Labuan, leaving a trail of destruction that damaged multiple homes, uprooted trees, and caused widespread power disruption, with one man injured during the incident.

Authorities confirmed that around 33 houses were affected when strong winds tore off rooftops, shattered structures, and sent debris flying across the residential area late in the evening.

The incident occurred at approximately 9.40pm, when intense winds suddenly intensified, catching residents off guard and causing panic as the storm rapidly swept through the neighbourhood.

Resident Injured by Flying Debris

The only reported casualty is a 64-year-old man, who suffered head injuries after being struck by flying debris during the storm. He was later taken for medical treatment.

Emergency responders arrived shortly after the incident to assist residents, assess damage, and ensure the safety of those affected as the storm subsided.

Despite the severity of the damage, authorities confirmed that no fatalities were reported.

Severe Structural Damage Across Housing Area

Utility teams were deployed to restore electricity while local authorities worked to clear fallen trees and secure dangerous debris from roads and residential zones.

Disaster response teams continue to assess the full extent of the damage and provide assistance to affected families.

Authorities Monitoring Weather Conditions

Meteorological authorities are expected to review the unusual weather event, as whirlwinds and tornado-like storms are rare in the region but can occur during unstable atmospheric conditions.

Recovery Efforts Underway
