Negeri Sembilan Faces Possible Snap Election Amid Rising Political Tensions

KUALA LUMPUR, MAY,2026 Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders have urged party members and Negeri Sembilan residents to prepare for the possibility of a snap state election following weeks of political uncertainty involving the state government and Umno leaders.

Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun raised the possibility during a political rally in Seremban, stating that the political situation in the state remains unstable despite Umno’s decision to continue supporting the unity government administration.

According to Aminuddin, Negeri Sembilan Umno leaders remain dissatisfied with his leadership even after agreeing to stay within the ruling coalition framework.

He told supporters that the public should remain prepared for any political developments, including the dissolution of the state legislative assembly and a fresh election.

Tensions Between PH and Negeri Sembilan Umno Continue

The current political tension began after Negeri Sembilan Umno publicly announced that all 14 of its state assembly members had withdrawn support for Aminuddin Harun as Menteri Besar.

However, the party later clarified that it would still continue cooperating with the unity government under the broader coalition arrangement directed by the national leadership.

Negeri Sembilan Umno secretary Datuk Mustapha Nagoor stated that the party respected the decision of the central leadership to maintain cooperation with Pakatan Harapan in the state government. Despite this, Umno leaders reportedly still maintain a lack of confidence in Aminuddin’s handling of several sensitive state issues.

The political dispute has created uncertainty over the long-term stability of the state administration and sparked speculation that an early election could eventually be called.

Aminuddin Calls for Stronger Election Machinery

During the Pakatan Harapan Perdana ceramah held near Stadium Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Seremban, Aminuddin acknowledged feeling hurt over Umno’s earlier move to withdraw support without prior discussion with coalition partners.

He stressed the importance of strengthening Pakatan Harapan’s political machinery and urged supporters, party members, and undecided voters to unite ahead of any possible election.

Aminuddin also called on PH supporters to work together as a team to ensure victory if a snap election is eventually held.

The Negeri Sembilan PH chairman emphasized that maintaining political momentum and public confidence would be crucial in the coming months.

Anthony Loke Says PH Must Stay Prepared

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke also addressed supporters during the event and assured them that the current state government would continue under Aminuddin’s leadership for now.

However, Loke warned that Pakatan Harapan must remain prepared if the state assembly is dissolved unexpectedly.

He stated that the coalition must be ready to “go into battle” again to regain the people’s mandate whenever the election is called.

Loke also declined to speculate on the timing of any possible election, saying that the decision would ultimately depend on the Menteri Besar and party leadership discussions.

PH Remains the Dominant Coalition in Negeri Sembilan

Currently, Pakatan Harapan remains the dominant political coalition in Negeri Sembilan.

Following the 2023 Negeri Sembilan state election, the PH-Barisan Nasional alliance secured 31 out of 36 seats in the state legislative assembly, giving the coalition a strong majority.

Within PH, DAP holds 11 assembly seats, making it the coalition’s largest component party in the state, followed by PKR and Amanah.

Political analysts believe that despite the current tensions, the coalition still maintains significant influence in Negeri Sembilan. However, prolonged disagreements between PH and Umno could weaken voter confidence if not resolved quickly.

Political Analysts Watching Closely

The political developments in Negeri Sembilan are now being closely watched nationwide because they could impact cooperation between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional ahead of future national elections.

Analysts believe that any snap election in Negeri Sembilan could serve as an important test of public support for the unity government formed after Malaysia’s 2022 general election.

Although no official announcement has been made regarding the dissolution of the state assembly, PH leaders continue encouraging supporters to stay prepared for all political possibilities.

For now, the Negeri Sembilan government remains operational under Aminuddin Harun’s leadership, but speculation over a possible snap election is expected to continue in the coming weeks
