Meta Launches Paid Subscription Plans for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp

Kuala Lumpur — In a significant move to reduce its heavy dependence on advertising revenue, Meta has officially rolled out paid subscription tiers for its three major platforms: Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.

The announcement was made by Meta’s Head of Product, Naomi Gleit, in a video posted on Instagram. The company introduced Instagram Plus, Facebook Plus, and WhatsApp Plus, with more subscription products planned for businesses, creators, and AI features in the future.

Pricing and Benefits

  • Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus: US$3.99 per month
  • WhatsApp Plus: US$2.99 per month

Key features offered in the new paid plans include:

  • Advanced analytics and insights
  • Story rewatch statistics
  • Wider audience reach
  • Profile customization options
  • Premium stickers, custom ringtones, and app themes (for WhatsApp)

Meta aims to eventually combine these offerings under a single unified subscription brand called Meta One.

This latest development comes as Meta faces growing investor pressure over its massive spending on artificial intelligence. The company has forecasted capital expenditure of between US$125 billion and US$145 billion this year, largely for AI data centers.

Following the announcement, Meta’s stock rose nearly 3 percent.

Background

Meta previously introduced ad-free subscription options for Facebook and Instagram in Europe in 2023 to comply with EU privacy regulations. The new global rollout marks a broader strategy to create additional revenue streams beyond targeted advertising.
