PM Anwar Praises Pakistan’s Role in Iran-US Talks, Reaffirms Malaysia’s Support for Peaceful Diplomacy in West Asia

KUALA LUMPUR, May 2026 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed Malaysia’s support for peaceful diplomacy in West Asia, while praising Pakistan’s role in ongoing mediation efforts linked to negotiations between Iran and the United States.

Anwar said Malaysia appreciates Pakistan’s contribution to the diplomatic process, including its willingness to host the next round of talks involving Iran and the United States. The matter was discussed during a telephone conversation with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday, where both leaders exchanged views on regional developments and the strengthening of Malaysia-Pakistan bilateral ties.

According to Anwar, the conversation reflected the close and longstanding relationship between Malaysia and Pakistan, as well as both countries’ shared interest in promoting peace, stability and prosperity within the Muslim world and the wider international community.

The Prime Minister said he also conveyed Hari Raya Aidiladha greetings to Shehbaz and the people of Pakistan, expressing hope that the spirit of sacrifice, brotherhood and unity would continue to strengthen peace and harmony among the ummah.

The discussion between the two leaders also touched on positive developments in negotiations between Iran and the United States. Among the key issues raised was the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a highly strategic waterway that plays a major role in regional trade, energy transportation and global economic stability.

The Strait of Hormuz is widely viewed as one of the world’s most important maritime routes, particularly for the movement of oil and gas supplies. Any tension or disruption in the area could have wider implications for global markets, energy prices and regional security. For Malaysia, stability in the region remains important due to its impact on trade, investment confidence and international economic conditions.

Anwar stressed that Malaysia remains firm in its view that all disputes should be resolved through dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful approaches. He said such methods are necessary to prevent further escalation and to ensure long-term stability in West Asia.

Malaysia has consistently called for conflicts in the region to be addressed through negotiation rather than confrontation. The government has also maintained that the international community must play a responsible role in reducing tensions and encouraging peaceful settlements between disputing parties.

In the same conversation, Anwar and Shehbaz also discussed the humanitarian situation in Gaza and Lebanon. Anwar said both leaders agreed on the importance of the international community speaking out and taking firm action to stop violence and atrocities against civilians.

The Prime Minister reiterated Malaysia’s position that attacks on civilians cannot be ignored and that stronger global pressure is needed to protect innocent lives. He said the suffering of people in Gaza and Lebanon must continue to receive international attention, especially as humanitarian concerns remain severe.

Anwar also emphasised that Malaysia-Pakistan relations would continue to be strengthened based on friendship, mutual respect and a shared commitment to global peace and prosperity. Both countries have maintained close diplomatic relations over the years, supported by cooperation in areas such as trade, education, defence, culture and Islamic affairs.
