Kuala Lumpur – Brazil’s national team camp has turned into a tense waiting room after star forward Neymar missed the squad’s first training session on Wednesday due to concerns over a right calf injury.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed that the 34-year-old was sent for imaging tests at a private clinic in Teresopolis instead of joining his teammates at the Granja Comary training centre. As of now, Neymar’s participation in the upcoming 2026 World Cup remains uncertain.
According to the CBF, no further details will be released until the medical team completes its full assessment. However, the absence of Brazil’s all-time leading scorer has quickly become the main talking point in the camp.
Neymar, who has scored 79 goals in 128 appearances for Brazil, returned to the national team setup last week for the first time since 2023. His recall had generated huge excitement, but questions about his fitness and form have lingered following repeated injury setbacks and a modest return to Santos.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti has been firm on the matter, stating earlier that Neymar would receive no special treatment and must prove his fitness and current form to earn a place in the squad.
Tight Schedule Ahead
Brazil’s preparations are under added pressure as the team faces a busy schedule. They will play a friendly against Panama at the Maracana on Sunday, followed by another against Egypt in Cleveland. Their 2026 World Cup campaign kicks off on June 13 against Morocco in New Jersey.
Brazil are drawn in Group C alongside Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland.
Ancelotti is already missing several key players for the Panama friendly, with defenders Gabriel Magalhães and Marquinhos, and forward Gabriel Martinelli unavailable due to their involvement in the Champions League final between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain.
The coming days will be critical for Neymar and Brazil as the football world waits to see if the country’s biggest star will be ready to lead the attack in what could be his final World Cup appearance.
