Brazil’s Bolsonaro to Remain Under House Arrest After Supreme Court Ruling

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will remain under house arrest after Brazil’s Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ruled that the arrangement should continue due to health concerns, according to a court decision issued on Friday, July 3, 2026.

The ruling allows the 71-year-old former leader to continue serving his sentence at home rather than in prison. Bolsonaro has been serving a 27-year prison sentence since November after being convicted of plotting a coup following his defeat in the 2022 presidential election to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Bolsonaro’s defense team had asked the court to maintain his house arrest, arguing that he would receive better medical care at home because of his ongoing health problems. The former president has faced repeated medical issues in recent years, many of them linked to a stabbing he suffered during the 2018 presidential campaign.

Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the continuation of Bolsonaro’s humanitarian house arrest was “reasonable, appropriate and proportionate,” noting that the former president had shown health improvement while serving his sentence at home.

The decision follows an earlier ruling in March, when Moraes granted Bolsonaro permission to spend 90 days under house arrest on medical grounds after he was hospitalized with an acute form of pneumonia. That initial period has now effectively been extended through the latest Supreme Court decision.

The new ruling also comes after a firearm owned by Bolsonaro was seized from a member of his security team during a police checkpoint last month. The incident had raised questions over whether his house arrest status could be reviewed or revoked.

However, Brazil’s Prosecutor General Paulo Gonet recommended earlier this week that Bolsonaro remain under house arrest despite the firearm incident. Moraes agreed with the recommendation, saying there was no proof of serious misconduct by Bolsonaro during the initial house-arrest period.
