KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Zambian police have detained main opposition leader Brian Mundubile over allegations of treason, nearly two weeks after a disputed presidential election.
Mundubile, who challenged President Hakainde Hichilema in the August 13 election, surrendered to police alongside his running mate, Makebi Zulu. Both recorded warn-and-caution statements, a procedure that normally precedes the filing of formal charges, and remain in police custody.
The development comes after Hichilema was declared the winner of the presidential election and secured around 60% of the vote, according to Zambia’s electoral commission. He is expected to begin a second five-year term.
Mundubile has rejected the result, alleging irregularities during the election. He previously said he went into hiding because he feared for his safety after challenging the outcome.
The treason allegations followed a security operation at Mundubile’s home one day after the election. Authorities said 11 people were arrested during the raid and that AK-47 rifles and other military equipment were found at the property.
Police said those detained were suspected of posing a threat to national security. Mundubile, however, has denied allegations that opposition figures were planning an insurgency.
The circumstances surrounding the raid have also been disputed. Authorities said security personnel returned fire after being shot at, while Mundubile claimed opposition members were unarmed and targeted by security forces.
Former Cabinet minister Mutotwe Kafwaya was killed during the operation. Amnesty International described his death as deeply concerning, while the United Nations has also raised concerns over the detention of opposition figures surrounding the election.
Before surrendering, Mundubile and Zulu had sought refuge at a United Nations building in Lusaka. The U.N. said it had received assurances from the Zambian government that their rights and access to due process and a fair trial would be respected.
The election itself was marked by tension, with vote counting temporarily suspended because of violence at some counting centres and reports of stolen ballot boxes. Mundubile continues to dispute the official result as authorities investigate the allegations against him and his allies.
