France Beat Paraguay 1-0 As Kylian Mbappé Sends Les Bleus Into World Cup Quarterfinals

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – France booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinals after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the Round of 16. The match, played in Philadelphia on Saturday, July 4, was decided by Kylian Mbappé’s second-half penalty as Les Bleus survived a physical and defensive battle from the South American side.

Mbappé scored the only goal of the match in the 70th minute after a video review confirmed that Diego Gomez had tripped Désiré Doué inside the penalty area. The French captain calmly converted from the spot, giving France the breakthrough they needed after struggling to break down Paraguay’s disciplined defensive structure.

The goal was also a major personal milestone for Mbappé, marking his 19th career World Cup goal in 19 appearances. He is now just one goal behind Lionel Messi’s all-time World Cup career record and remains among the leading contenders in the Golden Boot race at the 2026 tournament.

Paraguay entered the match with confidence after eliminating Germany in the previous round, but France’s experience and composure made the difference. Paraguay played with intensity and physical aggression, attempting to disrupt France’s rhythm throughout the match. However, Les Bleus remained patient and eventually found the decisive moment through Mbappé.

The match was also played under difficult weather conditions, with an extreme heat warning in effect and temperatures reaching around 100 degrees Fahrenheit, or 38 degrees Celsius. Hydration breaks became important as both teams had to manage the physical demands of the game in intense heat.

France head coach Didier Deschamps admitted that the conditions affected his team’s usual intensity. Despite that, France managed to control key moments and protect their narrow lead until the final whistle. The result sends France into the quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive World Cup.

For Paraguay, the defeat ended an impressive World Cup journey. After showing resilience in the knockout stage and producing one of the tournament’s biggest shocks against Germany, Paraguay pushed France hard but could not find an equaliser.

France will now face Morocco in the quarterfinals in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Thursday. The meeting will revive memories of the 2022 World Cup semifinal, when France defeated Morocco 2-0 in Qatar.
