Trump Plans First Republican Midterm Convention In Dallas Amid GOP Voter Fatigue

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – President Donald Trump and the Republican Party are preparing to hold a rare national convention ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, a move aimed at boosting voter enthusiasm as Republicans face pressure to defend their control of Congress.

The event is scheduled to take place in Dallas, Texas, on September 9 and 10. According to The Associated Press, Trump announced that Republicans would hold their first-ever national convention before a midterm election, describing it as an effort to increase turnout in races that will determine control of the House and Senate.

The plan marks a break from normal U.S. political tradition. Major party conventions are usually held during presidential election years to formally nominate candidates and present a national campaign platform. This time, however, Trump is using the convention as a political tool to keep the Republican base active even though he will not be on the ballot.

Republicans currently hold only slim majorities in Congress, making the November midterm elections highly important for Trump’s final two years in office. If Democrats regain control of either the House of Representatives or the Senate, they could block parts of Trump’s agenda and open investigations into his administration.

The convention also comes at a time when Republican leaders are concerned about voter fatigue. Midterm elections usually attract lower turnout than presidential elections, and the party in power often loses seats. Without Trump himself on the ballot, GOP officials are working to ensure that his Make America Great Again supporters still show up to vote.

Trump has promoted the Dallas convention as a major rally-style event that will highlight what he describes as Republican achievements since the 2024 presidential election. He has said the gathering will feature American workers, innovators, entrepreneurs, manufacturers, first responders and job creators as symbols of his “America First” agenda.

Republican National Committee chairman Joe Gruters said the convention is intended to unite Republicans around Trump’s political vision and build momentum before the midterm elections. The event is expected to focus heavily on campaign messaging, economic claims, border security, jobs and Trump’s broader “America First” platform.

Texas is also a strategic location for the event. The state is home to a closely watched Senate race between Republican nominee Ken Paxton and Democratic nominee James Talarico. Paxton, who was backed by Trump, defeated longtime Republican Senator John Cornyn in the primary, but Democrats see him as vulnerable because of past scandals and controversy.

The Democratic Party had considered holding a similar midterm event, but later dropped the idea due to financial concerns, including weak fundraising and party debt. Democrats also believe the Republican convention may give them a chance to link GOP candidates more closely to Trump, whose approval rating remains a political challenge for the party.
