KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – France advanced to the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-finals after securing a 2-0 victory over Morocco in the quarter-finals at Boston Stadium, Foxborough, Massachusetts. The result sent the two-time world champions into the final four, where they will face either Spain or Belgium.
Kylian Mbappe once again became the key figure for France, despite missing a penalty in the first half. The French captain made up for the miss by curling in a superb opening goal on the hour mark, giving France the breakthrough after Morocco had spent much of the match defending deep.
Six minutes after Mbappe’s opener, Ousmane Dembele doubled France’s lead with a low strike from distance. His goal gave France full control of the match and left Morocco with a difficult route back into the contest.
Morocco had shown strong defensive discipline early in the game, with goalkeeper Yassine Bounou saving Mbappe’s first-half penalty and keeping out several French attempts. However, Morocco struggled to create chances and did not register a shot on target until the 84th minute.
France dominated the rhythm of the match through high pressing, attacking movement and stronger control in key areas. Before the breakthrough, France had already produced several chances, including efforts from Mbappe, Dayot Upamecano, Desire Doue and Lucas Digne, whose long-range attempt hit the crossbar.
The victory also added another milestone to Mbappe’s World Cup career. At 27, he became the youngest player to reach 20 World Cup appearances and scored his 20th goal in the tournament, keeping him firmly in the Golden Boot race with eight goals in the 2026 edition.
For Morocco, the defeat ended hopes of reaching a second straight World Cup semi-final. The North African side, who also lost to France in the 2022 World Cup semi-finals, were unable to repeat the same attacking energy this time and clearly missed injured forward Ismael Saibari.
