Singapore And Malaysia Reaffirm Strategic Cooperation In Food Security, Energy And Regional Stability

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – Singapore and Malaysia have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in key strategic areas, including food security and energy, as both countries continue to strengthen long-standing bilateral relations. The commitment was expressed during Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s state visit to Malaysia from July 13 to 15.

According to Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim paid a courtesy call on President Tharman on Monday, where both leaders discussed areas of mutual interest and reaffirmed the need to build stronger cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.

The discussion also covered geopolitical developments, including the implications of the ongoing situation in the Middle East. Both leaders reaffirmed the importance of upholding international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and safeguarding freedom of navigation.

President Tharman’s visit marks his first state visit to Malaysia and reflects both countries’ commitment to keeping bilateral ties strong, stable and mutually beneficial. The visit also follows the state visit by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim to Singapore in May 2024.

During an audience with His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, both sides welcomed the positive state of bilateral relations and the progress achieved in key areas of cooperation. These include supply chain resilience, connectivity and joint projects such as the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link and the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone.

Both countries also encouraged deeper cooperation in renewable energy and sustainable development. These areas are increasingly important as Malaysia and Singapore work to support regional energy security, climate resilience and long-term economic growth.

President Tharman and his wife, Jane Ittogi Shanmugaratnam, were accorded a state welcome at Istana Negara, where they were received by Sultan Ibrahim and Raja Permaisuri Agong Raja Zarith Sofiah. The visit highlighted the close diplomatic relationship between the two countries at both government and royal levels.

On Tuesday, President Tharman also had an audience with the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, and met Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. During the engagements, both sides discussed possible cooperation in technical and vocational education and training, climate adaptation, flood mitigation and start-up development.

Singapore also welcomed more exchanges with Selangor, reflecting the wider scope of cooperation beyond federal-level relations. The discussions suggest that state-level partnerships could play a greater role in strengthening economic, education and climate-related initiatives between both sides.

President Tharman also engaged overseas Singaporeans in Malaysia and business leaders during the visit. In an address to economic and finance leaders, he touched on challenges in a changing global order, the need to maintain links with major powers, and the importance of strengthening ASEAN integration and bilateral cooperation.
