Dani Olmo Calls Out Argentina’s Conduct After Spain’s World Cup Victory

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – Spain midfielder Dani Olmo delivered a firm message to Argentina following the tense conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, calling on footballers to uphold respect and responsibility regardless of the result.

Spain secured their second World Cup title after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 at New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal during the second half of extra time. Argentina had been reduced to 10 men following Enzo Fernandez’s dismissal.

However, the final was overshadowed by several confrontations involving players and members of the Argentina coaching staff. Olmo said Argentina appeared to be constantly looking for reasons to provoke a confrontation as emotions intensified during and after the match.

The Spanish midfielder was also involved in a heated incident with Argentina staff member Roberto Ayala. Olmo admitted that his first instinct was to respond after being struck in the face, but he restrained himself because players have a responsibility to set an appropriate example for children and supporters watching the tournament.

Olmo said footballers must remain aware that their behaviour can influence younger generations. He believed maintaining self-control was more important than reacting emotionally, even in the highly charged atmosphere of a World Cup final.

Further controversy emerged during the medal ceremony. After Spain formed a guard of honour for Argentina as the runners-up collected their medals, several Argentine players reportedly turned their backs while the Spanish squad received their winners’ medals and lifted the trophy.

Responding to the incident, Olmo said Spain was not concerned about Argentina’s reaction. He stressed that values and the example transmitted through sport were more important, adding that both teams had a responsibility to demonstrate respect.

Olmo maintained that Spain had shown greater class both on and off the pitch. While acknowledging the intensity and frustration surrounding the defeat, he said poor conduct should not overshadow the standards expected from players and officials competing on football’s biggest stage.

Despite his criticism, Olmo distinguished Lionel Messi from the rest of the Argentine camp. He praised the veteran captain for continuing to behave with dignity and class throughout the occasion.

Messi completed his third World Cup final at the age of 39 after scoring eight goals during the tournament. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni later accepted that Spain had been the better side while expressing pride in his players’ efforts throughout the competition.
