Anthony Joshua Survives Two Knockdowns Before Stopping Kristian Prenga in Dramatic Second-Round Comeback

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 — Anthony Joshua recovered from one of the most dangerous opening rounds of his career to defeat Kristian Prenga by second-round stoppage in a dramatic heavyweight contest in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The former two-time world heavyweight champion was sent to the canvas twice during a chaotic first round before responding with a devastating attack that ended the fight late in the second.

Joshua entered the contest knowing that victory was crucial to preserving plans for a long-awaited fight against Tyson Fury, which is expected to take place later in 2026.

However, those plans appeared to be in serious danger within the opening seconds.

Prenga stunned Joshua with a powerful right uppercut less than 20 seconds after the first bell, sending the British boxer heavily to the canvas. Joshua returned to his feet quickly but appeared shaken as Prenga continued to apply pressure.

Joshua was still struggling to regain his balance midway through the round and was forced against the ropes as his Albanian opponent pursued an unexpected early knockout.

With approximately 30 seconds remaining in the opening round, Joshua was dropped for a second time. He managed to rise again and survive until the bell, although the prospect of a damaging defeat appeared increasingly likely.

Despite the disastrous opening three minutes, Joshua showed signs of recovery in the closing moments of the round and returned for the second with greater urgency.

With around 20 seconds remaining in the second round, Joshua connected with a sharp jab before following it with two powerful right hands.

He then delivered another crushing right that sent Prenga collapsing into the ropes and onto the canvas. The referee immediately recognised that Prenga was unable to continue, securing a dramatic stoppage victory for Joshua.

Joshua celebrated by climbing onto the ropes and raising his hands after completing an extraordinary turnaround.

The fight marked his return to the ring following a difficult period away from boxing. Joshua had not competed since being injured in a car accident in December 2025 that claimed the lives of two of his close friends, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele.

Usyk, who has previously defeated Joshua twice, was seated at ringside and watched as his former rival recovered from the early knockdowns.

The victory followed Fury’s successful warm-up contest against veteran Polish heavyweight Mariusz Wach in Pattaya, Thailand. Fury controlled that fight before Wach’s team withdrew him ahead of the eighth round.

With both British heavyweights securing victories, the possibility of a long-awaited Joshua-Fury clash has moved closer to reality.

The proposed fight has been discussed for several years but repeatedly failed to materialise despite both men previously holding heavyweight world titles.

Reports surrounding the contest suggest Joshua and Fury could each earn close to US$100 million if the fight proceeds.

After defeating Prenga, Joshua asked whether Fury was present at the venue before acknowledging the former world champion’s achievements and expressing hope that supporters would finally be given the major British heavyweight showdown they have awaited.

Joshua said he respected Fury’s accomplishments but made clear that both fighters were now moving towards a possible meeting in the ring.

Although the victory exposed defensive concerns after Joshua was knocked down twice, his ability to recover and produce a decisive finish demonstrated his power and resilience.
