Malaysian Ringgit Opens Higher Against US Dollar as Investors Monitor Negeri Sembilan State Election and Fed Meeting

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 — The Malaysian ringgit opened stronger against the US dollar on Monday as investors responded to positive domestic sentiment ahead of the Negeri Sembilan state election.

At 8 a.m., the local currency strengthened to 4.0830/0930 against the US dollar, compared with Friday’s closing level of 4.0885/0935.

Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd Chief Economist Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said market participants would closely monitor the extent to which the state election could influence Malaysia’s broader political landscape.

Early voting for the Negeri Sembilan state election is scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, while polling day will take place on August 1.

Domestic political developments are expected to provide some support for the ringgit. However, external factors will continue to play a dominant role in determining market sentiment and the currency’s direction.

Investors are expected to remain cautious ahead of the United States Federal Open Market Committee meeting scheduled for July 28 and 29.

Mohd Afzanizam said expectations of a possible US interest-rate increase were supporting the dollar, limiting the ringgit’s potential gains.

Higher oil prices could also add pressure to inflation and influence the Federal Reserve’s decision on the federal funds rate. As a result, ringgit trading is expected to remain cautious throughout the session.

The ringgit was forecast to trade between RM4.09 and RM4.10 against the US dollar during the day.

At the opening, the local currency traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies, although it weakened against the British pound.

The ringgit strengthened against the Japanese yen to 2.4956/5018 from Friday’s close of 2.4976/5008.

It also rose against the euro to 4.6530/6644 from 4.6556/6613. However, the local currency declined against the British pound to 5.4516/4650 from 5.4442/4509 previously.

The ringgit traded mixed against regional currencies.

It improved against the Indonesian rupiah to 227.3/227.9 from 227.6/227.9 and strengthened against the Philippine peso to 6.60/6.62 from 6.61/6.62.

However, the Malaysian currency weakened against the Thai baht to 12.1431/1790 from 12.1414/1606.

It also slipped against the Singapore dollar to 3.1676/1756 from Friday’s closing level of 3.1667/1708.

The ringgit’s performance in the coming sessions is expected to depend on political developments in Negeri Sembilan, signals from the Federal Reserve and movements in global commodity prices.

A stable domestic political environment could support confidence in Malaysian assets, while a stronger US dollar or expectations of higher American interest rates could continue to place pressure on regional currencies.
