Hospital Melaka Named National Plasma Supplier for Life-Saving Medicines

KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 2026 – Hospital Melaka has achieved a major milestone after its Transfusion Medicine Department was recognised as an official plasma supplier for Malaysia’s National Fractionation Programme.

The department is now the only institution apart from the National Blood Centre entrusted with supplying plasma for the programme, which processes donated plasma into critical medicinal products used to treat patients nationwide.

Melaka State Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem said the recognition followed the department’s successful compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice standards.

The certification was awarded by CSL Behring of Australia and GC Biopharma of South Korea, enabling Hospital Melaka to provide plasma that meets the required quality and safety standards for further processing.

Hospital Melaka is capable of supplying approximately 3,500 litres of plasma annually to the National Fractionation Programme, supported by consistent blood donations from the local community.

The plasma will be processed into essential medical products, including immunoglobulin, albumin and blood-clotting factors. These medicines are commonly required in the treatment of immune disorders, severe blood loss, liver-related conditions and certain bleeding disorders.

According to Ngwe, Hospital Melaka collects between 29,000 and 30,000 units of blood every year.

The donations are obtained through approximately 350 to 400 mobile blood donation campaigns, as well as contributions made directly at the hospital’s blood donation centre.

The recognition means that every eligible blood donation collected in Melaka could contribute not only to immediate transfusion needs but also to the production of plasma-derived medicines for patients across Malaysia.

Ngwe said the achievement reflects the growing strength of transfusion medicine services in Melaka and highlights the important role played by local blood donors in supporting the national healthcare system.
