The Story Behind Nissan Fairlady Z and Why It Carries the “Fairlady” Name

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Few Japanese sports cars have achieved the legendary status of the Nissan Fairlady Z, a model that has remained an icon of performance, style and reliability since its debut in 1969.

While many enthusiasts associate the Z with its powerful engines and motorsport success, the story behind its distinctive “Fairlady” name is equally fascinating.

The origins of the Fairlady name date back to 1961, years before the first Z car was introduced.

During a visit to the United States, then-Nissan President Katsuji Kawamata attended the Broadway musical My Fair Lady. Impressed by the production’s popularity, he believed the name would give Nissan’s new sports car an image of elegance and international appeal.

As a result, Nissan renamed its Datsun Sports roadster line “Fairlady,” beginning with the SPL213 model launched in 1961.

The decision proved successful, helping boost the car’s popularity, particularly in export markets where Nissan was seeking greater recognition.

When Nissan introduced the first-generation Z in 1969, the company retained the Fairlady identity for the Japanese domestic market, creating the now-famous “Fairlady Z.”

Outside Japan, however, the vehicle was marketed under different names based on engine displacement, including the Datsun 240Z, 260Z and 280Z.

This approach was intended to make the model easier to understand for overseas customers while preserving the Fairlady heritage in Japan.

The original S30-generation Fairlady Z quickly became a global success thanks to its combination of attractive styling, strong performance and affordable pricing.

Featuring its signature long-hood, short-deck design, the sports coupe challenged European rivals while offering greater reliability and value.

More than 500,000 first-generation Z models were sold worldwide between 1969 and 1978, making it one of the best-selling sports cars of its era.

Over the decades, Nissan continued developing the Z family through several generations, including the 280ZX (S130), 300ZX (Z31 and Z32), 350Z (Z33), 370Z (Z34) and the latest Nissan Z (RZ34).

Despite evolving technology and styling, every generation has maintained the core philosophy of delivering an exciting rear-wheel-drive sports car that remains accessible to enthusiasts.

Today, the Fairlady Z badge continues to be used exclusively in Japan, while international markets simply know the car as the Nissan Z.

The name has become more than just a model designation—it represents more than six decades of Nissan’s sports car heritage and remains one of the most recognised badges in Japanese automotive history.

From its unexpected inspiration in a Broadway musical to its reputation as a world-class performance car, the Fairlady Z has established itself as one of the automotive industry’s most enduring success stories.

Its combination of heritage, engineering excellence and timeless design continues to attract collectors and sports car enthusiasts around the world, ensuring the Fairlady Z legacy remains alive for future generations.
