KPJ Launches Penang’s First Orthopaedic and Rheumatology Centre of Excellence

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 – KPJ Healthcare Berhad has officially launched its first Orthopaedic and Rheumatology Centre of Excellence at KPJ Penang Specialist Hospital, marking another milestone in the group’s effort to strengthen specialised healthcare services across Malaysia.

The newly established centre is the third Centre of Excellence under the KPJ Health System and represents the company’s continued investment in advanced musculoskeletal, orthopaedic and rheumatology care.

Designed around an integrated model, the facility brings together orthopaedic subspecialties, rheumatology, rehabilitation, diagnostic imaging and treatment services on a single floor, allowing patients to receive seamless care from diagnosis through recovery.

The centre offers a comprehensive range of specialist services, including spine surgery, joint replacement, sports surgery, arthroscopy, trauma and fracture management, paediatric orthopaedics, hand and microsurgery, foot and ankle procedures, pain management and rheumatology.

Patients also benefit from multidisciplinary rehabilitation programmes tailored for post-surgical recovery, sports injuries and paediatric orthopaedic conditions.

One of the centre’s key highlights is the adoption of AI-assisted robotic joint replacement technology, computer-assisted navigation and minimally invasive surgical techniques.

These advanced technologies are designed to improve surgical precision, support better patient mobility and reduce recovery time following complex orthopaedic procedures.

The rehabilitation department is further equipped with specialised technologies, including an anti-gravity treadmill, enabling patients to undergo safer and more effective physical rehabilitation programmes.

Chairman of the KPJ Health System Governing Council, Datuk Syed Mohamed Syed Ibrahim, said the group’s long-term ambition is for every Centre of Excellence to evolve into a recognised institute with strong clinical, academic and research capabilities.

He said each centre is expected to become a destination for specialised treatment while contributing to medical research, professional training and healthcare innovation.

The Penang facility builds upon the earlier establishment of KPJ’s Heart & Lung Centre of Excellence in Johor and the Neuroscience & Stroke Centre of Excellence at Damansara Specialist Hospital 2.

Together, these centres form part of KPJ Healthcare’s strategy to establish 15 Centres of Excellence nationwide by 2030.

Through its integrated hub model linking KPJ Penang Specialist Hospital and KPJ Selangor Specialist Hospital, the new centre enables specialists to share expertise, conduct collaborative research and maintain common clinical standards across the KPJ Health System.

The approach also supports the integration of artificial intelligence, genomics and value-based healthcare into future specialist medical services.

KPJ Penang Specialist Hospital currently operates as a 270-bed tertiary hospital with more than 50 resident consultants representing over 20 medical specialties.

The addition of the Orthopaedic and Rheumatology Centre of Excellence further strengthens the hospital’s role as a regional referral centre for advanced musculoskeletal care.

The hospital is also the first healthcare facility in northern Malaysia to provide advanced wound care management and is collaborating with KPJ Healthcare University to develop Malaysia’s first AI-assisted remote telewound care programme.

The expansion reflects KPJ Healthcare’s broader strategy of leveraging advanced medical technology and integrated specialist services to improve patient outcomes while supporting Malaysia’s ambition to become a regional healthcare destination.

By combining clinical expertise, education, research and innovation, the group aims to deliver higher standards of patient care while driving the future development of specialised healthcare nationwide.
