Malaysia Could Join World’s 30 Largest Economies

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 – Malaysia could emerge as one of the world’s 30 largest economies if it maintains nominal gross domestic product growth that exceeds other countries by at least two percentage points annually, according to Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar.

Abdul Wahid said Malaysia currently ranks 35th globally, while the United Arab Emirates, which occupies the 30th position, has an economy approximately 20% larger than Malaysia’s.

He noted that countries currently ranked ahead of Malaysia would continue expanding, meaning the country must grow at a faster pace to narrow the gap and enter the world’s top 30 economies.

At the same time, emerging economies currently ranked below Malaysia, including the Philippines and Bangladesh, are also pursuing faster growth. This creates greater competition for Malaysia as it seeks to improve its position in the global economic rankings.

Abdul Wahid said Malaysia would need to outperform the nominal growth rates of other economies by at least two percentage points to have a realistic chance of reaching 30th place or higher.

Malaysia’s economy is currently performing relatively well despite continuing global challenges. Real economic growth stands at around 5%, while nominal growth is approximately 7%.

However, he stressed that the present momentum must be sustained over the longer term for Malaysia to achieve its ambition of joining the world’s 30 largest economies.

Nominal GDP measures the total value of goods and services produced at current market prices. Its performance can be influenced by real economic activity, inflation, currency movements and broader international market conditions.

Abdul Wahid said reaching the target would require Malaysia to continue implementing appropriate and consistent policies capable of attracting more investment from both domestic and foreign sources.

Stronger investment could help expand Malaysia’s productive capacity, create employment opportunities and support further growth across strategic industries.

Maintaining investor confidence will also be important as Malaysia competes with other emerging economies for capital, technology and participation in global supply chains.

Abdul Wahid delivered the remarks during the second Wisdom Malaysia Conference 2026 in Kuala Lumpur.

The event, organised by Kerjaya One PLT, brought together current and former industry leaders to share knowledge, experience and perspectives with emerging leaders and professional groups.

The conference included sessions on leadership, judgement skills and transformation case studies, alongside question-and-answer sessions and networking opportunities designed to provide practical insights to participants.
