Zahid Praises Malaysia’s Best Commonwealth Games Result Since 2010

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has praised the Malaysian contingent following its strong performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Malaysia concluded the competition with eight gold, three silver and five bronze medals, exceeding the target set before the Games and producing the country’s best Commonwealth Games achievement since 2010.

The national delegation comprised 59 athletes, including 22 para athletes, who represented Malaysia across the sporting programme in Glasgow.

Ahmad Zahid congratulated the athletes, coaches, officials, support personnel and everyone involved in preparing the contingent for the international competition.

He said the achievement brought pride to the country and reflected the commitment, discipline and sacrifices made by those involved throughout the preparation and competition periods.

The Deputy Prime Minister also stressed that every athlete deserved recognition, regardless of whether they returned with a medal.

He said Malaysians remained proud of the effort and determination shown by all members of the national contingent while representing the country on the Commonwealth stage.

Malaysia finished the Games with a total of 16 medals and placed 10th in the overall medal standings. The eight-gold performance surpassed the national target of five gold medals.

The Glasgow Games were held from July 23 to August 2 and featured athletes from Commonwealth associations competing across 10 sports, including several integrated para-sport events.

Malaysia’s performance demonstrated the contribution of both able-bodied and para athletes to the country’s overall medal tally.

The result also underlined the importance of continued investment in athlete development, coaching, sports science and competition exposure to help national competitors remain successful at major international events.

Ahmad Zahid’s message highlighted the collective effort behind Malaysia’s campaign, recognising that sporting success depends not only on athletes but also on coaches, medical personnel, administrators and support teams.

The achievement in Glasgow is expected to provide further encouragement to Malaysia’s sporting community as preparations continue for future regional and international competitions.

Malaysia’s eight-gold haul now stands as an important milestone in the country’s Commonwealth Games history and its strongest overall performance in more than a decade.
