KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — A team of 65 Malaysian students delivered an impressive performance at the Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC) 2026, earning a strong collection of awards while two students secured places among the competition’s overall top three champions.
William Ong Wee Nian and Hu Jiashen were both named overall second runners-up, marking one of Malaysia’s standout achievements at this year’s international mathematics competition.
William is a Grade 3 student at Cempaka International School Damansara Heights, while Hu is a Grade 6 student at Mont’Kiara International School. Their results highlighted the strength of Malaysia’s young mathematics talent on the global stage.
According to Singapore Maths + Olympiad Malaysia, the students’ achievements reflected their determination, mathematical ability and commitment throughout the competition.
Malaysia Collects Dozens of Awards
Beyond the two overall champions, Team Malaysia also secured an extensive list of honours at SIMOC 2026.
The Malaysian contingent returned with 27 gold awards, 28 silver awards, 48 bronze awards and 12 honourable mentions across the various competition categories.
The results represented a significant achievement for the 65-member Malaysian delegation, which competed against students from across the world in both individual and team-based mathematical challenges.
More than 2,200 students from over 40 countries participated in the event, which was held at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore.
Five Days of Mathematics and International Collaboration
SIMOC 2026 was conducted over five days, combining competitive mathematics with teamwork and cultural exchange activities involving students from different countries.
Unlike mathematics competitions that focus only on individual problem-solving, SIMOC incorporates both independent and collaborative challenges.
Students first take part in the Math Olympiad Contest, where they solve demanding mathematical problems individually. They then participate in two team-based competitions known as Math Warrior and Math Master Mind.
The team events require participants to communicate effectively, think strategically under pressure and combine their mathematical strengths to solve complex challenges.
The format is designed not only to evaluate mathematical knowledge but also to develop teamwork, problem-solving and communication skills among young participants.
Malaysian Students Make Their Mark Globally
Team Malaysia representatives described the students’ international achievements as the result of sustained effort, determination and support from families and teachers.
The delegation also emphasised that success at SIMOC extended beyond medals and rankings, as participants gained valuable international exposure and experience competing alongside students from different cultures and educational backgrounds.
For Malaysia, the strong showing demonstrates the ability of young students to compete at a high level in mathematics while developing skills that extend beyond the classroom.
William and Hu’s overall second runner-up finishes, combined with Team Malaysia’s haul of gold, silver and bronze awards, placed Malaysian students prominently among participants at one of the year’s major international mathematics competitions.
The achievement also provides encouragement for other Malaysian students to pursue mathematics, academic competitions and international learning opportunities, while showing that young talents from the country are capable of standing alongside some of the world’s strongest student competitors.
