The plan is built around four key areas: strengthening energy-efficiency implementation, reskilling and upskilling workers, developing sustainable financing mechanisms, and encouraging greater private-sector participation and investment.
Akmal Nasrullah said stronger energy efficiency is increasingly important as Malaysia experiences rising electricity demand driven by industrial expansion, data-centre investments and the transition towards cleaner energy sources.
Malaysia’s previous National Energy Efficiency Action Plan delivered 60,886 gigawatt-hours of electricity savings over 10 years, exceeding its original target of 52,233 GWh. The achievement generated estimated savings of about RM16.1 billion and avoided approximately 35.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions.
NEEAP 2.0 also complements major national strategies including the National Energy Policy 2022–2040, National Energy Transition Roadmap and New Industrial Master Plan 2030, reinforcing energy efficiency as an important part of Malaysia’s long-term economic and sustainability agenda.
With the new plan, Malaysia aims to make energy efficiency a standard practice for industries, businesses and households while reducing costs, strengthening energy security and supporting the country’s transition towards a more sustainable economy.
