KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — Massive flash floods along the Nepal-China border have killed at least 160 people and left hundreds missing after sweeping through communities on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
Nepal police reported at least 157 deaths, while Chinese authorities reported three deaths and 265 people missing in Gyirong County in Tibet. Roads, buildings and vehicles were heavily damaged by floodwaters and debris.
Officials in Nepal said 403 people were reported missing, including 341 foreign nationals. Among them were citizens from India, the United States, Australia, Britain and Canada. Many were travelling through the area as part of pilgrimages towards Mount Kailash in Tibet.
Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry also said travel agencies had lost contact with 11 Malaysians believed to have been in Nepal’s Rasuwa district when the disaster struck.
The floods also caused major infrastructure damage. At least 19 bridges and nearly 40 kilometres of roads were swept away, while villages and hydropower projects were affected. Authorities have warned residents to stay away from several swollen rivers.
The U.S. Geological Survey initially detected what appeared to be seismic activity but later determined that it was a massive glacial collapse, not an earthquake. Ice, rock and debris rushed downstream, creating catastrophic flooding in communities below.
