Nicolas Sarkozy Freed from Prison Pending Appeal

PARIS, El Sky News – Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been officially released from prison after serving 20 days of his one-year sentence for corruption, pending the outcome of his appeal. The decision was confirmed by the French judiciary on Monday, November 10, 2025.

Sarkozy, 70, had been convicted in 2021 for influence peddling and corruption in a case known as the “wiretapping scandal.” Prosecutors alleged that he and his lawyer, Thierry Herzog, attempted to obtain confidential information from a judge in exchange for a prestigious position.

Following an appeal from his legal team, the Paris Court of Appeals granted conditional release under judicial supervision, citing procedural concerns and the ongoing review of the case.

In a brief statement outside his Paris residence, Sarkozy maintained his innocence and vowed to continue his legal fight.

“I have full confidence in the justice system,” he told reporters. “This is not only about defending myself, but also about defending the principles of fairness and truth.”

Sarkozy’s release adds another chapter to his ongoing legal saga. The former president, who led France from 2007 to 2012, has faced multiple investigations, including alleged illegal campaign financing during his 2007 presidential bid.

Despite his tarnished political image, analysts note that Sarkozy still retains a loyal base within France’s conservative movement. Some even suggest his legal battle could rekindle public sympathy among right-leaning voters ahead of the 2026 local elections.

The French judiciary has yet to announce a date for the appeal hearing.
