U.S. Firm Apollo Sports Capital to Acquire Majority Stake in Atlético Madrid

MADRID, El Sky News – Spanish football club Atlético Madrid announced that U.S.-based investment company Apollo Sports Capital (ASC) will become its new majority shareholder. The agreement, confirmed on the club’s official website and multiple major outlets including Reuters, AP News, and ESPN, marks a significant shift in ownership for one of Spain’s top La Liga teams.

According to the club’s official statement, Apollo Sports Capital — a sports-focused division of Apollo Global Management — will acquire between 51% and 55% of Atlético Madrid’s shares. The transaction is still subject to regulatory approval and is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2026.

Despite the change in majority ownership, Atlético Madrid clarified that Miguel Ángel Gil Marín will continue as Chief Executive Officer, and Enrique Cerezo will remain as club president. Both will retain minority stakes in the organization.

The club also emphasized that the deal with Apollo Sports Capital is not part of a multi-club ownership strategy, but rather a long-term investment aimed at strengthening Atlético Madrid’s sporting and business growth.

Reports from Reuters and ESPN noted that the agreement values the club at approximately €2 billion to €2.5 billion, making it one of the most notable investments in European football in recent years.

Once finalized, the acquisition will make Atlético Madrid one of several major European clubs with significant U.S. ownership influence, continuing a growing trend across global football.
