MIC Considers Leaving Barisan Nasional Amid Calls for Respect and Renewal

KUALA LUMPUR, El Sky News — The Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) is facing one of its most significant internal debates in years as it contemplates whether to exit the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition. The issue was highlighted during the party’s 79th Annual General Assembly, where members discussed the future direction of MIC.

MIC President Tan Sri S.A. Vigneswaran emphasized that the party “is no longer respected” within BN, expressing concerns about being sidelined and overlooked as a partner. He called for an open discussion on whether leaving the coalition could restore the party’s dignity and strengthen its role in Malaysian politics.

Vigneswaran also stressed the importance of renewing MIC from within, particularly by empowering the youth and addressing longstanding grievances. He said that while exiting BN is a serious decision, it may be necessary to reclaim the party’s influence and identity, framing it as both a symbolic and strategic move.

Delegates at the assembly passed a resolution supporting the exploration of leaving BN but left the final decision to the Central Working Committee (CWC). Vigneswaran confirmed that the party has not made a formal decision yet and will continue to study the matter carefully before taking any action.

Despite the uncertainty, MIC reaffirmed its commitment to support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim until the end of his term, underscoring that the party’s considerations are about internal strategy rather than immediate political opposition.

BN leadership has indicated that MIC is free to decide its own path, emphasizing that no component party is being forced to stay or leave. The situation reflects broader discontent within MIC’s grassroots, with some members feeling marginalized in the current coalition.

As MIC weighs its options, the party faces a delicate balance: preserving its relevance and respect among the Indian community while considering the practical consequences of exiting a longstanding political alliance.
