El Sky News – The North Sumatra Province (Sumut) in Indonesia is currently grappling with a severe natural disaster crisis as flash floods and landslides strike 12 districts/cities, resulting in a alarming number of casualties. The consecutive disasters, which occurred between November 24 and 26, 2025, have left widespread destruction, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate.
Death Toll Reaches Dozens
According to the latest data released by the North Sumatra Regional Police (Polda Sumut), the incidents have confirmed the deaths of at least 34 people, while 52 other individuals are still reported missing and are actively being searched for by rescue teams. Overall, the total number of victims affected across various categories—including minor and serious injuries—has reached 175 people, with 1,168 individuals forced to take refuge in temporary evacuation centers.
12 Severely Affected Regions Reported
Head of Public Relations for Polda Sumut, Kombes Pol Ferry Walintukan, confirmed that the 12 severely affected regions include Madina Regency, Nisel, Pakpak Bharat, Sergai, Tapteng, North Tapanuli, Nias, Tapsel, Humbahas, Padangsidimpuan, Sibolga City, and Langkat. Reports also indicate that a total of 148 natural disaster incidents occurred during this period, with the majority involving landslides (86 incidents) and floods (53 incidents).
South Tapanuli and Sibolga Most Critical
Among the areas experiencing the most serious impact is South Tapanuli (Tapsel), which recorded 22 incidents and the highest death toll, namely 17 fatalities, in addition to 73 residents suffering injuries. Sibolga City reported 59 affected victims, with eight confirmed dead and 46 others still in search and rescue (SAR) operations. Meanwhile, regions such as Serdang Bedagai (Sergai), Mandailing Natal (Madina), and Langkat reportedly did not record any loss of life but faced significant property damage, prompting local residents to move to safer locations.
Local authorities, with the assistance of security forces and welfare agencies, are working hard to reopen access routes that have been cut off and to provide humanitarian aid to all affected victims. Efforts to locate the missing victims are also being intensified in several critical areas.
