Kota Kinabalu, El Sky News — Sabah politics continues to present an interesting dynamic as the Homeland Solidarity Party (STAR) takes a firm stand to remain as an Opposition bloc in the Sabah State Legislative Assembly (DUN) for the time being.
This decision was confirmed by STAR President, Datuk Seri Dr. Jeffrey Kitingan, despite the development where one of the party’s State Assemblymen (ADUN) accepted an appointment as an Assistant Minister in the state government led by Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor.
The announcement immediately calmed speculation that arose after the ADUN’s appointment, which was seen by some quarters as a sign that STAR might be in the process of joining the government bloc.
Long-Term Political Strategy
Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan explained that the party’s stance to remain outside the administration bloc is part of a broader political strategy, where STAR feels that the role of a constructive Opposition is more important and effective for the interests of the people of Sabah at this time.
“We have made a decision not to join the state government for now,” he stated. “This is a collective decision. While we respect the appointment of our ADUN, STAR’s focus is to ensure that a strong check and balance can be implemented in the state administration.”

The role of an Assistant Minister from a party with Opposition status is seen as a unique scenario in the Malaysian political landscape, particularly in Sabah. This raises questions about how the position of the ADUN will be reconciled with the party’s official stance.

“STAR will continue to work hard on the ground, bringing the people’s voices into the state assembly. Our presence as the Opposition does not mean we are merely opposing, but we want to ensure good and transparent governance is implemented,” added Datuk Seri Jeffrey.
