Albanese Appeals to Australian Teens to Utilize School Break, Ahead of Under-16 Social Media Ban

SYDNEY, El Sky News – Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has taken a final, heartfelt approach by delivering a personal message to the nation’s teenagers, just days before the enforcement of a new law that will restrict social media access for users under the age of 16.

In an effort to mitigate the detrimental mental health impact of ‘doomscrolling’ culture, the Canberra government has set December 10, 2025, as the commencement date for the stringent regulation. This rule will mandate social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and X to implement robust age verification systems.

Protecting the Mental Well-being of Young People

Albanese, in a statement released ahead of Australia’s summer school holidays, urged young people to seize this golden opportunity to ‘disconnect’ from the digital world.

“This is the time for you to spend quality, face-to-face time with friends and family. Try a new sport, spend time outdoors, or dust off a long-forgotten book. The real world always offers more opportunities and joy than the virtual world,” he said.

This drastic measure makes Australia among the first countries globally to take such strict action against social media. The government argues that while social media offers connection, it has also become a catalyst for the rise in anxiety, depression, and stress, fuelled by algorithms designed to endlessly maintain user attention.

Heavy Fines Await Tech Giants

Under the new legislation, giant tech platforms are now bound by legal obligations to take ‘reasonable steps’ to ensure that individuals under 16 years old cannot open or maintain an account.

Failure to comply could see these companies facing financial penalties of up to A$49.5 million (approximately RM154 million).

Technology companies are currently actively testing various age verification methods, including facial matching technology and verification through government-issued identification documents—a process that has sparked debate over data privacy issues.

Albanese’s announcement is viewed as a final, educational emphasis, reminding parents and teenagers about the importance of digital balance ahead of the imminent change in the nation’s digital landscape.
