Elderly Couple Perish in Tragic House Fire in Kudat

KUALA LUMPUR – A devastating late-night fire claimed the lives of an elderly couple after they were trapped inside their burning home at Kampung Lausan, Batu 4, on Friday night.

The victims, identified as a 74-year-old man and his 73-year-old wife, were found burnt beyond recognition in their bedroom following the incident, which occurred at approximately 11:50 PM.

Kudat Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) Chief, Darikson Galanang, stated that the department received an emergency call at 11:58 PM. A team of 10 firefighters was immediately dispatched to the location, situated about six kilometers from the station.

Rescue Obstacles and Operations

Upon arrival, the operations commander reported that the two-story non-permanent structure was already 100% engulfed in flames. Firefighters faced significant challenges reaching the site due to a narrow bridge and low-hanging electrical wires that obstructed the passage of fire engines.

Despite these hurdles, fire crews managed to initiate extinguishing efforts using a water supply from the fire engine’s tank.

“Upon further inspection, the remains of the couple were discovered at 1:00 AM inside the bedroom area,” Darikson said in a statement on Saturday. He added that the first body was successfully extricated at 2:00 AM, followed by the second victim at 3:50 AM.

Investigation Underway

The fire was brought under control by 1:30 AM, and the entire operation concluded at 4:47 AM. The remains have been handed over to the police for further action, including post-mortem examinations.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire and the total estimated losses resulting from the tragedy.
