Three Teenagers Still Missing After Tanjung Lompat Beach Drowning Tragedy

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026 — A search and rescue operation is continuing at Tanjung Lompat Beach in Bandar Penawar, Kota Tinggi, after a group of teenagers encountered difficulties in the water during what had begun as a camping trip with friends.

The incident occurred at around 7.45am on Wednesday, when several members of the group were swimming along the beach. Six teenagers were initially reported missing, although two were successfully rescued by members of the public.

One of the missing teenagers, Muhammad Thaqif Rayyan Rumainoor, 16, was reportedly seen struggling in the water after moving farther from shore into a deeper area.

A 16-year-old friend who witnessed the incident said the situation developed very quickly. The group initially called out to Muhammad Thaqif when they noticed he had moved farther away, but he did not appear to respond. When they looked again, they saw him struggling to stay afloat.

Several teenagers immediately attempted to help their friend.

According to the witness, approximately five people entered the water to assist Muhammad Thaqif, but the rescue attempt quickly became more serious when some of those trying to help also disappeared in the water.

The teenagers were part of a group of 16 friends who had been camping in the area since Tuesday. The witness said it was the first time the group had gathered for an activity involving so many of them.

The incident prompted an emergency response involving multiple agencies as authorities launched a search and rescue operation along the coastline.

Of the six teenagers initially reported missing, two were rescued by members of the public. Another victim was later found at approximately 1.25pm, around 800 metres from the location where the group was first reported missing.

Authorities continued searching for the three remaining missing teenagers.

Muhammad Thaqif’s father, Rumainoor Salleh, 47, said the family remained hopeful that his youngest son would be found safe.

At the same time, he said the family was preparing to accept whatever outcome emerged from the search.

Rumainoor said he first learned about the incident at approximately 8.10am after noticing his son was not at home and failing to reach him by telephone.

He was unaware that Muhammad Thaqif had gone out with friends the previous night because he had been working and returned home late.

The teenager’s sister, Nur Adriana Dania, 24, also expressed hope that rescuers would locate him as soon as possible.

She said she had an especially close relationship with Muhammad Thaqif and had taken care of him following their mother’s death in 2021.

Search teams are continuing operations around Tanjung Lompat Beach and surrounding waters in an effort to locate the remaining teenagers.

The tragedy highlights the dangers that can develop rapidly in coastal waters, particularly when individuals attempt an unplanned rescue without proper safety equipment or professional assistance.

Authorities have not yet announced the final outcome of the ongoing search for the three teenagers.

For the families gathered near the beach, attention remains focused on the rescue operation as they wait for further information about their loved ones.
