Father and Nine-Year-Old Son Killed in Early-Morning House Fire in Kuala Nerus

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 2026— A father and his young son were killed in a house fire at Kampung Tok Jembal, near Kuala Nerus, in the early hours of Wednesday, authorities said.

Kuala Terengganu District Police Chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor identified the victims as a 40-year-old man and his nine-year-old son.

Police were informed of the incident at approximately 4am after receiving information about a fire involving a two-storey semi-permanent house located near Sekolah Kebangsaan Tok Jembal.

Emergency responders were immediately mobilised to the location as firefighters worked to contain the blaze and carry out rescue efforts.

A total of 16 personnel from the Kuala Nerus and Kuala Terengganu Fire and Rescue Stations were involved in the operation.

The response included a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT), a Compact Fire Rescue Tender (CFRT) and a water tanker used to support firefighting operations at the scene.

Despite the rescue operation, both the father and his son were confirmed dead following the incident.

The fire affected a two-storey semi-permanent residential structure in the village.

Authorities have not yet released further details on the extent of structural damage or whether other occupants were inside the house when the fire began.

The tragedy has drawn attention to the serious risks posed by residential fires, particularly those occurring during the early morning hours when occupants may be asleep and have limited time to escape.

Police said the cause of the fire remains under investigation, while the total value of losses has also yet to be determined.
