Bukit Kayu Hitam Border Commander Survives Shooting as Gunmen Open Fire During Pre-Dawn Drive to Subuh Prayers

BUKIT KAYU HITAM, Malaysia — Police are investigating a suspected retaliation shooting after two unidentified gunmen opened fire at a senior Malaysian border security commander while he was driving to perform Subuh (dawn) prayers near the Malaysia–Thailand border, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

The incident took place along the road in Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah, shortly before sunrise. According to initial police reports, the border commander was travelling alone in his official vehicle when two men on a motorcycle approached and discharged several rounds at the car. The assailants then fled the scene in the direction of the border.

Despite the sudden attack, the border commander was unharmed and managed to drive safely to the nearest police station to report the incident. Officers at the station immediately cordoned off the area and launched a thorough investigation into the motive and identities of the gunmen.

Senior police officials said that the attack may be linked to retaliation by organised crime syndicates operating around the border region. This comes amid recent enforcement operations that have seen heightened border security activities and a series of successful crackdowns on smuggling and cross‑border criminal networks.

Bukit Kayu Hitam is a strategic border crossing between Malaysia and Thailand, often frequented by security forces due to its proximity to international trade routes and the potential for illicit activities.
